Irregular Menstruation Cycle

When a woman has a lack of menstruation or menstrual period is late, the most common concern is pregnancy. Usually, this is the first sign of pregnancy. The best way to know if you are pregnant is a pregnancy test done.

However, many women may have irregular periods at some time or for life. An irregular menstrual period is what happens out of the ordinary. You may have a missing or menstruation may be advanced or delayed more than usual, or may have more or less flow than usual.

There are many reasons why the menstrual cycle can change, including:

  • Birth control: especially intrauterine devices (IUD) and hormonal contraceptive methods, such as the pill, patch, ring or injection
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Any disease
  • Drugs
  • Menopause
  • Excessive exercise
  • Malnutrition
  • Stress
  • Decreased or sudden weight gain
  • Travel
